The Pocky Gallery: Hard & Soft Type Candy

Gummy!
Grape Gummys. Very aeromatic and flavourful gummys. Not as solid as your German gummys, more maleable and sweet.
coke
Coke flavoured hard candy. Injected with carbon dioxide, these candies bubble in your mouth, just not as violent as pop-rocks. Definately an aquired taste.
cafe
Cafe au Lait hard candy. Taste like watered down Cafe au Lait. Not as good as the Meiji black box toffee.
Peas
Kasugai Roasted Hot Green Peas. Roasted peas with a large quantity of hot wusabi. Crunchy, with that wusabi kick.
Nuts
Cracker Nuts. These are peanuts with a cracker shell. Kinda like a captain’s wafer hardened into a shell and wrapped around a peanut. Salty & sweet at the same time. Not too bad. The nuts with Crunch!
Cider
Cider Soda Pop candy. No this does not taste like Woodchuck, nor any kind of cider. It’s a hard candy with a bubblegum type taste.
Milk
Milk Candy. These candies are like popping hardened sweetend condensed milk into your mouth. Tasteeee.
Milk
Cracker Nuts. These, according to the label, are the “Tangy Tastebud tickler” of the cracker nut family. They seem to be just like the butter ones, with garlic powder applied. Not bad if you love garlic.
Milk
Strawberry Milk Candy. These come two per individually wrapped package. One sweet strawberry candy, with one milk candy. Mix, and Strawberry milk happens in your mouth.
  Coffee
Meiji Cafe Au Lait Scotch. Rectangular hard candy that tastes like a Cafe Au Lait with 4 Sugars. Best of the type.
Pucca
Pucca Choco Snack. This is an unsalted pretzel instead of a cookie fish.

Pocky Gallery: Pretz Type

pretz!
Butter Flavored Pretz. Pretty flavourless, unless butter is a flavour.
Pretz!
Cocoa flavored pretz. Chocolate pretz with a light cocoa power sprinkled on.
Strawberry
Tomato flavoured Pretz. Sun dried tomato pretz in an Italian dressing powder.
Giant Tomato
GIANT Tomato Pretz. Just like the Original, but larger. Costs about $9 a box. Get this one if you can!
Tomato Pretz
New box for Tomato Pretz

Fansubs made the Anime Empire

Came across an article on Reason Magazine that describes how the 80 billion dollar Japanese Animation market grew out of Piracy. Now I wouldn’t call what we did as fansubbers piracy. The amount of time we put into properly subbing a show or series tended to take up alot of our off hours. And it’s not like it is now, where you can get HD or digital transfers straight off a tivo. Most of the times a friend/Anime store owner/etc would go over to Japan and would bring back Laser Discs with which we’d use to make our Fansubs.

And the translations; if you were lucky to have a friend or know of someone who liked the anime you were wanting to subtitle, they might translate it for a discount rate ($50 an episode) or if you got really lucky, free. The problems with the translators were that most of them were Japanese as a first language, so their comprehension of English grammar was quite poor, so a lot of editing after the fact took place. (Needless to say, some unnamed translators for titles we subtitled straight out stole our translations and passed it off as their own works).

But I do agree with the author in that the Anime industry’s “Looking the other way” did more to encourage the growth of anime in the US, but the comparison to the US media companies is not very solid. Anime was and still is a fairly niche market. The values don’t even come close. $80 billion is just barely what the advertisers spend on US Broadcast advertising. That doesn’t even count DVD sales, Syndication (Just ask Jerry Seinfeld and Rick Berman how that syndication thing works for them). Then we get into the Motion Picture industry, since Japanese Anime isn’t just TV Broadcast. The US theature domestic take is a mere 8.1 billion, before DVD sales. And I think the world already buys into the US TV & Motion Picture market; Anime was an untapped network in the US in the 80s and 90s.

I think what you’ll see as the next emerging market is Bollywood and SE Asian content. With the increasing populations from those parts of the world living in and moving to the United States, those niche markets would seem a good bet to grow. The difference between them and Anime is that the main consumers of the Bollywood market are relocated Indians, so there would be no need to subtitle and re-package; they already speak the language of the original.

The Pocky Gallery: Pocky Type Candy

pocky!
Men’s Pocky. Dark Chocolate. Best bargain, lots of pocky for little money.
pocky!
Marble Tea Pocky. One of the Best Tasting pocky’s out there.
pocky!
Almond Pocky. A almond flavoured chocolate with bits of almond.
Strawberry
Strawberry Pocky. Like the almond pocky, this is strawberry flavoured chocolate with pieces of dried strawberry.
pocky!
Milk Flavoured Pocky. The japanese seem to have something for sweet milk.
pocky!
Black Bitter Marble Pocky. My first non generic Chocolate Pocky ever. Was in heaven and became a pocky addict. Bitter black chocolate with small lines of white chocolate.
pocky!
Hello Kitty Pocky. Strawberry flavoured, was shocked I hadn’t seen it at the Sanrio stores as well.
pocky!
Generic Bulk Chocolate Pocky.
pocky!
Almond Crush Pocky. Almond Flavoured chocolate with large pieces of almond. 6 packs per box, 5 sticks per pack. Little expensive, but great tasting.
pocky!
Chocolate Pocky. This is the “standard” pocky. Mmmmmm
pocky!
Almond Crush Pocky. Instead of Almond flavoured chocolate, it’s Chocolate flavoured chocolate.
pocky!
Coconut Pocky. This should be “Almond Crush” labeled, because of the bits of coconut and internal packaging. Nice coconut flavour, just not much for coconut meat.
pocky!
Looks to be the Plain Almond Crush Pocky. Plain flavour. I’d go more for the flavoured Almond Crushes instead.
pocky!
GIANT Pocky. Just like the original, but GIANT size, costs about 8 bucks a box.
pocky! Creme Brule/Flan pocky. This smells like creme brule, tastes a bit butterscotch flavoured. Interesting flavour.
YamYam!
Chocolate Dip Yamyam. Take the cookie stick, dunk it in the chocolate resevoir, and then into the sprinkles for a tasty delight.
Pocky!
Almond Lucky, by Meiji. This is a bit like the Chocolat Almond Cruch from Glica, however, they’re packaged more like a dinner or coffee pocky. They’re about 2.75 inches long, and about 22 per box. Short pocky, indeed.
Pretz!
Vanilla Dip YamYam. Vanilla flavoured dip with cookie sticks.
Pocky!
Bittersweet Chocolate pocky. Almost tastes like coffee liquer pocky. Fluffy consistancy for a small package pocky.
Pocky!
Banana Lucky, by Meiji. Tastes like a banana smoothie. Sweet.
Pocky!
Toppo. This is a thin pretzel stick, hollow on the inside, with vanilla filling. This is good! The pretzel isn’t salted, but adds just a small salty flavour which balances the sweet of the vanilla filling rather nicely.
Giant Strawberry
Giant Strawberry Pocky. 24% Something. 20 individually wrapped giant pocky sticks with real dried strawberry. Each stick is about 10″ long, and appx 3 times the diameter of a normal pocky stick. Giant pocky is always somewhat disappointing, since it’s the same thickness of coating on the giant sticks as the normal pocky.
Pikey!
Pikey. This is small salted sticks about two inches long, which look like they have been dipped in chocolate up an inch. Odd taste because the salt over powers the sweet, and the cookie stick has no flavour.
Coconutty
Coconut Pocky. Same as the one above, but note the new Hawaiian Shirt Package Styling
Decorer
Purely White Decorer Pocky. Someone took a pocky stick, put it in wedding cake frosting, and then used a Milton cake decoration tool to make this. It’s like eating cake frosting on a stick.
Green Tea
Green Tea Mousse Pocky. This was quite vile. Now, I don’t like tea to begin with, but I always did enjoy the Royal Tea Pocky, but I think that’s because there’s some honey in there somewhere. This I couldn’t stand, and gave it to my friend who actually drinks a lot of green tea. He assured me that the taste is indeed spot on green tea, and that he quite enjoyed it.
Pineapple Cream
Pineapple Cream. This was just like a Pina Colada, except it’s non-alcoholic, had pineapple bits, and is wrapped around a crunchy cookie stick.
Almond Crush
Almond Crush Pocky. Updated packaging, same deliciousness.
Murasaki
Murasaki Imo Pocky. This exotic pocky is from a Purple Sweet Potato. With the purpleness, your mind thinks “Grape” but your mouth tastes “Sweet Chocolate”. It’s Ok.
Double Taste
Cafe Stick Double Taste. This off brand (Kabaya) consists of 4 packs of pocky-like sticks. One with a dark chocolate covering, ther other with cafe au lait. Not too bad, but I’d rather have had just the dark chocolate.

Poare. So Glica decided it didn’t like Toppo getting in on the Pocky Game, so they setup a new brand, Poare. It’s like a Toppo, just a thicker cookie outside compared to Toppo. This Chocolate Custard is a creamy “Mousse”-like inside.

Poare Bananna. This is like the Chocolate, but instead of Chocolate, it’s Banana.

Kurogo Pocky. Black Ingredients lead to a sesame-flavoured salty snack.
